A monument to Mahatma Gandhi in Yerevan was pelted with eggs and set on fire, because Armenians suspected him of sympathizing with Turkey. Shoaib Khan, a researcher at the Center for Central Eurasian Studies at the University of Mumbai commented on the fact of vandalism against Ghandi's monument for Baku Tribune. During the Khilafat movement in Turkey Muslims in British ruled India supported Turkey along with other leaders of Indian freedom movement like Gandhi and Nehru who also attended the Khilafat meetings whose headquarter was in Mumbai. Many of the streets in Mumbai bare the names of those prominent Muslim leaders, who participated in this Khilafat movement. At that time India as a whole was ruled by the British. Indians were fighting against the British imperialist forces for their independence. In the war Turkey was on the opposite side of the British, Indians were expected to support Turkey and any country opposing the British imperialism. If because of this reason, the Armenians are vandalizing the statue of Gandhi then I think the Armenian people have gone crazy. Gandhi or any leader from the subcontinent of that time never criticized or used any evil words against Armenian community. In fact, Indians supported Armenia in the recent war against Azerbaijan. Indian media whole-heartedly supported Armenia over Nagorno-Karabakh. During the whole war Indian media targeted Azerbaijani forces and administration. I think Armenian people like their Government and are unable to accept their humiliating defeat at the hands of Azerbaijan. They are helpless and taking out their anger by such actions.
