“It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband,” the palace announced on Twitter.
Speaking at Downing Street, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Philip “shaped and inspired the lives of countless young people".
“We mourn today with Her Majesty The Queen. We offer our condolences to her and to all her family,” he said. “And we give thanks, as a nation and a kingdom, for the extraordinary life and work of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.”
The prince was admitted to the hospital on Feb. 16 for “a few days of observation and rest.”
Buckingham Palace later said that Philip was being treated for an infection and would stay in the hospital for a little while longer.
On March 1, the prince was transferred to St Bartholomew’s Hospital, where Buckingham Palace said he would continue to be treated for an infection but would also “undertake testing and observation for a pre-existing heart condition.”
He was later transferred back to King Edward VII hospital on March 5 until his discharge on March 16.
Philip, 99, was the Duke of Edinburgh.
He retired from public life in 2017.
