The World Health Organization says Japan recorded the highest global number of new coronavirus cases in the seven days through Sunday, according to NHK World-Japan. The WHO on Wednesday released an update on new COVID-19 cases reported during the week from July 18 to 24. The report says the number of weekly cases in Japan stood at 969,068 -- an increase of 73 percent from the previous week. Globally, more than 6.6 million weekly cases were reported, down 3 percent from a week earlier. The WHO says the BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants of the Omicron variant continue to be dominant. The United States saw its weekly cases drop 3 percent to 860,097. Germany confirmed 565,518, a decrease of 16 percent. However, cases are on the rise in East Asia. Mongolia reported a nearly seven-fold increase from the week before, while South Korea marked an 80-percent rise. The WHO notes that the actual number of infections may be even higher due to differences in countries' sampling strategies.
