The upcoming virtual meeting between United States President Joe Biden and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping should be seen as a "continuation of intensive diplomacy" by Washington when it comes to China, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said on Friday.

The US believes that "intense competition requires intense diplomacy," she told reporters. Biden will be "setting the terms... of an effective competition" with China at the summit and the US will not be looking to achieve "major deliverables or outcomes" from the meeting, according to Psaki. The two leaders will also discuss areas where their countries can cooperate, she added.
